Abstract

This community service program was designed to enhance understanding of the Theory of Supply in microeconomics among the staff of Joymart, an SME located in Sungai Keledang, Samarinda Seberang. As a medium-sized modern retailer, Joymart frequently faces operational challenges, such as stock shortages due to reliance on suppliers, uncertainty in the local supply chain for the Nacnut product line, and weak risk management regarding defective or expired goods. To address these issues, the program was implemented in two phases: a preparatory phase involving initial observations and the development of assessment tools, followed by an implementation phase featuring interactive discussions and in-depth interviews with the retail owner. The results of the activities revealed that Joymart’s supply stability is highly vulnerable to external logistical constraints and seasonal shopping trends during Eid al-Fitr and Christmas. Interestingly, local consumer behavior is relatively insensitive to price fluctuations (price inelasticity). In response to this situation, the service team provided solutions in the form of risk management education to help the partner transition to a proactive mitigation system, training in inventory forecasting based on seasonal calendars, and recommendations for diversifying backup suppliers to ensure product supply continuity. This case-study-based education successfully shifted Joymart’s management mindset toward more measured control of shelf inventory while reducing financial risk.
