Abstract

Student engagement is one of the important indicators of learning quality. Student engagement reflects the extent to which students are actively involved in learning, both cognitively, behaviorally, and emotionally. Measuring student engagement is important to evaluate the quality of learning and provide input for improving and enhancing the administration of education. This study aims to map the student engagement profile of undergraduate students in Indonesia by conducting a survey of 164 sample students. The instrument used was a student engagement measurement instrument consisting of 22 items. The results obtained indicate that student engagement among students in Indonesia is quite good, but most respondents only reach the moderate student engagement criteria. The analysis results show that Cognitive Engagement (CE) has the lowest score compared to Behavioral Engagement (BE) and Emotional Engagement (EE). Student engagement based on gender differences and semester levels shows no significant differences. Meanwhile, student engagement based on the type of motivation and the dominant learning methods applied shows significant differences. Thus, educators still need to implement learning approaches that can optimize student engagement through methods capable of enhancing student motivation and participation.
